General Sir Peter Mervyn Hunt GCB, DSO, OBE (1916 - 1988) was Chief of the General Staff, the professional head of the British Army.

Educated at Wellington College, Peter Hunt was commissioned into the Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders[1].

Hunt saw action during the Second World War and as a temporary lieutenant colonel was awarded the Distinguished Service Order for service in North West Europe in 1945.[2]

In 1964 he was appointed General Officer Commanding the 17th Ghurka Division which was deployed to Borneo the following year[3]. Then in 1966 he was appointed Commandant of the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst and in 1968 went on to be Commander of Far East Land Forces[4]. In 1970 he became Commander of the British Army of the Rhine[5]. He served as Chief of the General Staff from 1973 to 1976 when he retired from the British Army.

In retirement he became Constable of the Tower of London[6].
