[edit] Career To Date
Peter began his career at Birmingham City as a trainee living with a local family called the 'Marson's' to save commuting from Sunderland daily but failed to make a first team appearance. He did captain the academy side during his time with the Blues and made many appearances for the reserves. Peter's progress was hampered with a host of injuries including a serious knee injury and after this realised that he should make a fresh start at another club. The Young Full Back decided to join up with Plymouth Argyle at the beginning of the 2003–04 season on loan where his performances earned him a more permanent deal. Once he signed, the young fullback soon proved himself to be as reliable and steady as they come and he was one of the first names on Paul Sturrock's team sheet and was a mainstay of Argyle's Second Division Championship winning side, playing 40 league games and scoring 1 goal. This run of form lead him to be called up to the Welsh U21 squad and receiving his first cap.
The step up in class of The Championship proved no problem for Peter as the Geordie lad went on to make another 38 appearances for Plymouth Argyle in the 2004–05 season. This led to interest from the then Leicester City manager Craig Levein, who duly got his man for the start of the 2005–06 season. Gilbert moved to Leicester City for a fee in the region of £200,000.[1]
Gilbert's move to Leicester City was an unsuccessful one, making only 6 appearances before being loaned to fellow Championship side Sheffield Wednesday in November of the same year.[2]He joined Sheffield Wednesday permanently in January 2006 for an undisclosed fee,[3] after impressing during a six week loan at the club. He played some of his best football under Sheffield Wednesday's then manager Paul Sturrock when he was at the Devon club Plymouth[4] and things were looking up for the Welshman until the 30th March 2006 when he learnt that he would miss the rest of the season due to torn cartilage in his knee.[5]
The 2006–07 season did not start for Gilbert until the 9th January when he joined Doncaster Rovers on loan for one month to regain match fitness from his knee injury. Gilbert made 5 starting appearances for Doncaster. Making his debut in the 2-0 victory against League One rivals Darlington.[6] The loan was cut short due to injuries in the Sheffield Wednesday defence. On the 13th of March 2007 Gilbert made his first start for Sheffield Wednesday in 11 months. Impressing in a 2-0 league win against Colchester United. He went on to make 6 appearances for Sheffield Wednesday that season.
