In this painting, Henry IV and Marie de’ Medici, appear as if they themselves were the companions of the God’s. It is in this painting of the royal engagement, that Rubens chooses to use symbolism to show how the marriage to Marie de’ Medici helped to save France, and bring them out of war. Upon viewing the portrait of Marie de’ Medici, Henri IV falls instantly in love. The painting is showed to him by cupid and Hymen, the God of marriage; while the supreme God Jupiter, and his wife, Juno, view the proceedings from above. In this adaptation Henry IV, is wearing his steel breast plate and is silhouetted with a landscape, where the smoke of war lingers. He is being encouraged to give up war for love, by the personification of France. The main focus of this painting is political propaganda.[1]
