The concept of mass probably has its earliest origins as being "the quantity which a balance measures". (quote needed). Newton defines mass as "the quantity of matter" in his Principia. However, this defintion was soon regarded as inadequate title = "Concepts of Mass in Classical and Modern Physics | lastname=Jammer, Max. Even today, some authors, such as Eugene Hecht, argue that

  • "There is no really good defintion of mass"

The problem is not that there is a lack of defnition of the term - rather, there are too many defintions, each slightly different.
