Coordinates: 11°14′N 78°53′E / 11.23, 78.88 Perambalur is a Municipality town in Perambalur district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu.

It is the headquarters of Perambalur District.Perambalur district is a centrally located inland district of Tamilnadu, spread over 3690.07 km², which was trifurcated from the erstwhile composite Tiruchirappalli district and was formed on 1 November 1995. The district is bounded by Cuddalore district in the North, Tiruchirappalli district in the South, Thanjavur in the East and Namakkal and Tiruchirappalli districts in the West. The district, for administrative purpose, has been divided into six Taluks (Perambalur, Kunnam, Veppanthattai, Ariyalur, Sendurai and Jayakondam) which is further sub-divided into ten blocks viz. Perambalur, Veppanthattai, Veppur, Alathur, Ariyalur, Thirumanur, Sendurai, Jayakondam, Andimadam and T.Palur) comprising of 345 Villages, 322 Village Panchayats and nine Town Panchayats The soil is predominantly red loamy and black soil. The normal rainfall of the district is 908 mm which is less than 946.9 mm, the normal rainfall of the State. The Ground water resource through tubewells and wells contribute nearly 68% of irrigated area command. The major crops grown in the district are paddy, groundnut, sugarcane and millets. Cashew is the major plantation crop.

Total Geographical area of the district is 369007 ha. and net sown area is 216422 ha. The net area under irrigation is 71624 ha. The total population of the district as per 2001 census is 11,81,029 of which 5,88,441 are males and 5,92,588 are females. The sex ratio is 1007 with the birth rate at 21.6 and the death rate at 7.7. The density of population of the district per sq.k.m is 281 persons as against the state average of 429 persons.The district, for administrative purpose, has been divided into six Taluks (Perambalur, Kunnam, Veppanthattai, Ariyalur, Sendurai and Jayakondam) which is further sub-divided into ten blocks viz. Perambalur, Veppanthattai, Veppur, Alathur, Ariyalur, Thirumanur, Sendurai, Jayakondam, Andimadam and T.Palur) comprising of 345 Villages, 322 Village Panchayats and nine Town Panchayats. Thuraiyur also one of a famous taluk near by Perambalur. The perumalmalai in Thuraiyur is a famous temple for Perumal. Every year, in October (Puratasi in Tamil month)each Saturday people used to got to this Temple. The soil is predominantly red loamy and black soil. The SEZ planned by SREI Infrastructure Finance Ltd is not taking off presently. It SIDCO will soon be setting up an industrial estate at the outskirts of Perambalur town. Approval of a site measuring 44.4 acres at Elambalur by the Directorate of Town Planning has been hastened. According to an official release, a total of 113 plots are to be set up in an area of 27.50 acres. In addition, commercial complexes would be contributed on a site up to a maximum of five cents in area. The city is multi cultured with people from various states residing there.

Perambalur is located at 11.23° N 78.88° E.^[1] It has an average elevation of 143 metres (469 feet).

There is one big panchayat named as Varadarajanpet. More than thirteen thousand (13000) people are living here. And all people are purely roman catholic. There will be one church named as "Alangara Annai Aalayam". Also there is one mother mary shirine "Saleth Matha Aalayam". Two major schools are here Don Bosco Hr Sec School for Boys and Alangara Annai Hr Sec School for girls. All the students studying from the surrounding villages of this panchayat. The major work for the people is harvesting of Cashew Nuts, Ground Nuts, Rice.

There is one Village named Thambiranpatti under Vellur panchayat. More than 2000 people are living here. Here Famous Temeple are there named "Muthu Mariyaman Temple", "Thamibiran Koil","Perriyannan Koil". One major Government schools name Panchayat Union Elementary School, Thambiranpatti, Velur are here and.The major work for the people is harvesting of Rice,Vegitables and Onion,Ground Nuts.

As of 2001 India census,^[2] Perambalur had a population of 29,698. Males constitute 51% of the population and females 49%. Perambalur has an average literacy rate of 78%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 82%, and female literacy is 73%. In Perambalur, 10% of the population is under 6 years of age.
