[edit] Summary

Description
Deutsch: Thronsaalfassade. Babylon, farbig glasierte Ziegel. 604-562 v. Chr.
English: Facade of the Throne Room. Babylon, coloured, glazed bricks. 604-562 BCE. The Throne-Room was situated in the third courtyard complex of the royal palace. Its 56 m wide facade was decorated with coloured, glazed bricks. A tentative reconstruction show the composition of the upper part of the facade, including stylised palms and patterned registers. Two original sections are displayed on the left next to the Ishtar Gate. The lower part of the facade with representations of striding lions was predominantly reconstructed from the original baked brick fragments. The frieze of lions was presumably arranged symmetrically so that the animals faced toward the central main entrance to the throne-room (cf. the direction of movement in the reconstruction opposite). The throne-room was excavated by Robert Koldewey from 1899 to 1917. It was used as an official reception room.
