Mr. Penrod is the Chief Information Security Officer for The Weather Channel. John has worked in Information Technology for almost 20 years, with over seven years focusing on the field of information security.
John is a Gulf War veteran who served ten years with the United States Navy. Five years of his service were on the USS Forrestal, a US Navy Air Craft Carrier and one year was spent working with Cuban refugees in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. While in the Navy, John worked with many IT systems ranging from anti-submarine surveillance to cryptology.
After leaving the US Navy in 1997, John spent two years working at Equifax Risk Management as the Manager of Technical Operations. At Equifax Risk Management, John was directly responsible for the technical direction of a 2,000 person call center. This responsibility, included: technical architecture, disaster recovery, operations and IT security.
John joined The Weather Channel in 1999 as a network architect in the IT organization, reporting to the SVP, of IT Operations. Since that time, John assumed responsibility for company wide IT security, infrastructure architecture and in 2005, business continuity. Today, in the role of Chief Information Security Officer, John reports to the EVP, CIO of The Weather Channel. In this capacity, John sets the long-term vision for The Weather Channel's information security strategy, policies and practices while planning for and responding to information security threats.
John is widely regarded as an expert in the field of information security and has been recognized many times in magazines, articles and newsprint on the work he has done with The Weather Channel and in the technology industry.
A native of Georgia, John is married with two young children and is a resident of Dallas, Georgia.
