From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Peggy of the Cove was the title given to the sole survivor of a shipwreck during the mid 1800's. The wreck occurred on a stormy October night at Halibut Rock, just off the rocky shore of the famous fishing village, Peggy's Cove, Nova Scotia. There are two versions of the same story.
According to Bill deGarthe, a famous artist who resided in Peggy's Cove, a young woman by the name of Margaret, washed ashore. The people that took her in called her Peggy. Folks for miles around would say, "Let's go see Peggy of the Cove." So in her honor, they named the village, Peggy's Cove.
In 1996, two ladies from North Dakota arrived at Peggy's Cove, claiming to be the great-granddaughters of Peggy. According to them, Peggy was a little girl too young to remember her name. Miraculously she washed ashore and was rescued. The folks that took her in named her Peggy. The remainder of their version is the same, folks would come the see the miraculous child they called Peggy of the Cove, thus derived the name, Peggy's Cove.
