The Presiding Bishop



The Presiding Bishop of The Episcopal Church is elected every nine years to serve as the Chief Pastor and Primate of the Church. In this role the Presiding Bishop is charged with responsibility for leadership in initiating and developing the policy and strategy in the Church and speaking for the church as to the policies, strategies and programs authorized by the General Convention. [Title I Canon 1.2.4(a) (1)] The Presiding Bishop is charged to speak God’s words to the Church and to the World, as the representative of this Church and its episcopate in its corporate capacity. [Title I Canon 1.2.4(a) (2)] In addition to these key roles the Presiding Bishop oversees and presides at meetings of the House of Bishops, provides for Episcopal ministry in cases of vacancies and visits the Dioceses of this Church. Biography

Before becoming Presiding Bishop, Bishop Griswold was Bishop of Chicago (1987-1997) and Bishop Coadjutor (1985-1987). He was ordained in 1963 and served three parishes in the Diocese of Pennsylvania before being elected bishop.

Currently, Bishop Griswold co-chairs the Anglican-Roman Catholic International Commission. He has served on diocesan, national and international committees for liturgy, worship and ecumenism. He was on the standing committee for the Lambeth Conference and the planning committee of the House of Bishops, among others.

Frank Griswold has presented at and led conferences and retreats nationally and internationally throughout his ministry, spanning a variety of topics including ecumenism, evangelism, spirituality and theology.

His articles, essays and sermons have been published in periodicals and theological journals including Anglican Theological Review, Episcopal Life (monthly column), Cross Currents, Anglican Advance and many others. His daily meditations from the General Convention of 2000 produced a Cowley Publications Cloister Book entitled Going Home.

The Presiding Bishop was educated at St. Paul's School in Concord, N.H. and earned an A.B. in English literature at Harvard College (1959). He attended the General Theological Seminary and earned his B.A. and M.A. in theology at Oriel College, Oxford University (1962, 1966). He has received honorary degrees from the General Theological Seminary, Seabury-Western Theological Seminary, Nashotah House and Sewanee.

Bishop Griswold and his wife, Phoebe Wetzel Griswold, have two adult daughters.
