Hi Paul. I think that the word "obsolete" is a more accurate description of HD DVD than "discontinued". The format has been abandoned by its chief developer, Toshiba. However, there is currently a fire sale of HD DVD players and discs and manufacturers and stores try to get rid of them, so they're still on sale. Also, LG is still trying to promote its dual-mode HD DVD + Blu Ray player, as I guess it's still useful to Blu Ray users as well as people who have an existing collection of HD DVD disks. It's really hard to define at what point the format has been discontinued. When the last player or disk has been sold? However, obsolete is easier to define, as HD DVD has been supplanted by something newer, and is no longer the "general" thing as the list of stores refusing to stock it increases. This fits the definition of "obsolete", as you can see from a dictionary definition: http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/obsolete.
