[edit] Biography

Paul grew up in Amarillo, Texas and graduated from Caprock High School, the same Alma Matar as another well known UFC fighter named Evan Tanner. Paul received the nickname "The Headhunter" due to his propensity, in his early years of martial arts training, to kick for the head of his opponent.

[edit] Career

In his debut in the UFC, he had an impressive win over Justin Eilers with a KO in 3:34 of the first round for his debut fight in UFC 51: Super Saturday on February 2, 2005. His next fight was against UFC newcomer Kevin "The Shaman" Jordan on UFC 53: Heavy Hitters on June 4, 2005 where Buentello won with a guillotine choke submission at 4:00 of the first round. He lost a title shot against UFC Heavyweight Champion Andrei "The Pitbull" Arlovski at UFC 55: Fury on October 7, 2005. Buentello was knocked out on the first punch landed by Arlovski, and fell directly on top of his opponent, which made it difficult for the audience on hand, and even the announcers to realize what had happened. Following his loss to Arlovski, he faced off against Gilbert Aldana at UFC 57 where he won via TKO (strikes). It was after this fight that Buentello infamously addressed the crowd in his post-fight interview, expecting them to finish his catchphrase "Don't fear me, fear the consequences!" After uttering the first half of the phrase, Buentello was met with utter silence from the audience.

Buentello won his first two fights for the Strikeforce promotion. He defeated David "Tank" Abbott via KO in only 43 seconds. He then scored a Round 2 victory by (TKO) stoppage over veteran heavyweight Ruben Villareal. Buentello's most recent fight was against former K-1 Grand Prix Champion, Carter Williams at Strikeforce Shamrock vs. Baroni. Paul won by TKO (Corner Stoppage) in the second round.

On the website mma.tv Buentello has stated that he is interested in fighting the infamous bare-knuckler brawler and YouTube mainstay, Kimbo Slice. Buentello has said that he has talked to Kimbo's management and a possible matchup between the two according to Buentello is "60% likely to occur, 40% unlikely to occur".

Buentello was defeated via submission by knee strikes by Alistair Overeem for the vacant Strikeforce heavyweight title on November 16th in San Jose, California. [1]

Most recently, Buentello has been signed to fight perennial Top 10 Heavyweight Aleksander Emelianenko on July, 19, 2008 at Affliction's first event entitled "Banned". This event will be taking place at the Honda Center in Anaheim CA.

[edit] Personal life

- Buentello is married and has two daughters.[2]
- Appeared on an episode of the TV show "Miami Ink", in which he gets a tattoo incorporating his 'Headhunter' logo on his upper thigh.
