Paul Baccanello (born June 22, 1979, Adelaide, Australia) is a current tennis player from Australia.
Paul has had an injury plagued career, his highest singles ranking of 129 was achieved on November 3rd, 2003 after stringing together numerous strong performances on the Challenger circuit. His current singles ranking is 439.
His biggest achievement to date was qualifying for the main draw at Wimbledon in 2003. He managed to defeat former top 100 player Ivo Heuberger in the first round, before falling in a tight four set match to giant Croatian Ivo Karlovic in the second round. For his efforts he earned a career best prize-money of over $23,000 and rose 37 places in the ATP rankings.
Unfortunately the many injuries Paul has sustained over the years have severely hampered his ability to produce his best tennis. However, in what was probably his finest performance to date, he did manage to reach the semi-finals of the Challenger event at Segovia in 2003, where he met none other than the great Rafael Nadal. In a closely contested match, Paul was able to take Rafael to a tie-break in the first set, before Nadal took control of the contest in the second set, easing to a 7–6 6–4 victory.
Paul currently has a 2–8 ATP record and has earned a total of $261,855 prize money over his career.
