What follows is a brief history of everything.
[edit] Big Bang
According to the Big Bang Theory, the most widely accepted scientific theory on the formation of the universe, matter appeared from a point in the void, and exploded outward in all directions.
[edit] Stars & Galaxies
This matter consisted of clouds of hydrogen atoms, which very gradually began to coalesce, forming points of gravity. As even more matter was sucked inwards, the pressure at the centre became so great that the compressed atoms fused, triggering a nuclear chain reaction. This is how a new star is born, a crushing mass of hydrogen atoms pulled inwards by gravity, while the explosive power at the centre radiates energy outwards, in the form of heat, light, and other wavelengths of electromagnetic radiation. Millions of stars can circle around the centre of a galaxy, and galaxies are found in groups know as globular clusters. Stars have a limited lifespan, and once they have used up their internal fuel, they explode outwards in a supernova, spewing out clouds of atoms, including newly formed heavy atoms such as helium, nitrogen and carbon into space.
