GENEALOGY & EARLY YEARS:
Patricia Bragg was born Patricia (no middle name) Pendleton at Peralta Hospital in Oakland, California on April 29, 1929 to Harry (aka Henry) Clay Pendleton, Sr. and Nettie Louise Coward Deacon Pendleton. (State of California Cert. of Birth 29-026962, filed 5/27/1929, C. R. Faucher, State Registrar).
Her parents were prominent socially and professionally in the San Francisco Bay Area community.
According to their respective local newspaper obituaries (Oakland Tribune, San Francisco Chronicle, & SF Examiner), Harry Clay Pendleton, (1874-1961), a Georgia native. came to California around 1900 as an employee of the early Wall Street Journal, and later became a successful SF Bay Area builder & real estate developer. Little is known about his family background except that he was the son of Henry Clay Pendleton and Nannie Robinson Pendleton, was previously married to a California woman named "Winnie" (maiden name unknown) in 1911, had no children, and that they were divorced in the early 1920ties.
Nettie Louise Pendleton (1898-1964) was the granddaughter of Maria Leas Coward & Hamilton Graham Coward, early California Gold Rush-era pioneers from Maryland, and the daughter of Ella May Spear Coward Wheatley (1874-1916) & Herbert Campbell Coward (1869-1937), President and co-founder with his brother, Ross W. Coward (1875-1941), of The Continental Salt Company and The California Salt Company, which later merged with a couple of other companies into The Leslie Salt Company in 1925. Herbert's 1937 Oakland Tribune obituary also noted that he was a cousin of Noel Coward, the famous English playwright.
From her mother's 1917 marriage to Andrew Gordon Deacon (1891-1933), which ended in divorce, Patricia Bragg has a half brother, Herbert Coward Deacon, born 1919 and apparently still living, and also had a brother, Harry Clay Pendleton, Jr., born 1930, deceased 1993, from the later marriage. (California Birth & Death Index)
Harry & Nettie Pendleton were married in Oakland, CA on July 10, 1928 (Alameda County, CA 1928 Marriage Index, Book 175, Page 162), but circa 1935, they were separated & living apart---- he in Oakland and Nettie in adjacent Piedmont, California (Ref.: Oakland-Piedmont City Directories and Alameda County, Ca Voting Registration Rolls for 1936 & beyond), where she raised her three children and where Patricia graduated high school from The Mary Wallace School, a private school located near their Piedmont, CA home. (Oakland Tribune, June 7, 1947).
In 1952, Patricia Pendleton married Robert Elton Bragg (1922-1993), a chiropractor and the son of Paul Chappius Bragg (1895-1976), the well-known nutritional food manufacturer & exercise guru and Neva Parnin Bragg Busch (1897-1988), Paul's former wife.
