[edit] Synopsis

Howard uncovers Vince's plan for the big birthday party. The party is a blast until someone is caught cheating...

[edit] Plot

Vince convinces Howard (by paying a female friend of his to feign an interest in jazz and stationery) to allow him to throw a party in the flat, supposedly in celebration of Howard's birthday, but in reality for Vince to show off his new outfit. He invites all his friends, who are seemingly unaware of who Howard is, or what his involvement in the party might be. After a short game of spin the bottle downstairs in the Nabootique, which is broken up by Naboo, Howard inadvertently reveals that he is a virgin. As everyone awkwardly heads back upstairs, Vince is propositioned by the wife of Dennis the Head Shaman in the stock room. When Vince discovers her identity he leaves immediately, claiming that Dennis will kill him, and sure enough, once he has discovered his wife's infidelity Dennis vows to kill Vince. Attempting to hide on the roof, Vince finds a dejected Howard. Dennis then catches up with Vince, who pretends to be in love with Howard by kissing him. This repulses Dennis into leaving, but has an inadvertent effect on Howard... the two then fall off the roof and on to Vince's present for Howard: a bouncy castle. Howard proceeds to renounce his new found homosexuality as soon as he sees the jazz girl from the start of the episode, but Vince is heartbroken and claims he will never love again; until her female friend walks outside. The episode ends with the whole party on the bouncy castle.

[edit] Cultural References

  • Howard says that he and Lester Corncrake recently received a 12-disc boxset of Charlie Mingus.
  • When asked if there will be a party, Vince replies that Howard doesn't want one and that he'd rather sit in a corner with his Lester Corncrake and listen to Weather Report. Weather Report were a jazz fusion band of the 1970s and 80s.
  • When Naboo parodies a cookery show, he mentions Woolworths, saying that to make hash cakes you don't need a cauldron and can buy a metal compost bin from a local Woolworths store.
  • After Tony Harrison and Saboo take over DJing, Tony suggests playing Fleetwood Mac's 'Tusk' "in its entirety, with the pauses, as Lindsey Buckingham intended it to be heard", to which Saboo replies that thinks he could only just get away with a track from earlier album 'Rumours', and then calls the band "bullshit munchers". They eventually decide on playing 'Would I Lie to You?' by Charles and Eddie.
  • Howard states that whoever has a blue Mazda parked outside should "get another car".
  • When Howard refuses to go downstairs because it's out of bounds, Vince calls him Richie Cunningham, referring to the character from Happy Days who would often try to follow the rules.
  • After seeing that Naboo has no genitals, Dennis says that his crotch is "as smooth as the bonnet of a Porsche".

[edit] Production

  • One of the deleted scenes on the DVD features Old Gregg, disguised as the girl Vince bribes to make Howard have a party.
  • Noel's girlfriend, and member of electro band Robots in Disguise, Dee Plume, appears as a member of the party crowd and is present when Vince and Howard play spin the bottle downstairs in the Nabootique. She also appears at the end of the episode, and joins Vince on the bouncy castle.
  • When Vince arrives at the party, the backing music from 'Future Sailors' from 'The Power of the Crimp' is played, and he is carried by the parka people from Arctic Boosh and 'Tundra', and also speaks in a voice reminiscent of them starting with "You are the chosen ones..." (a possible reference to the song from Fountain of Youth).
