Park Point at RIT (originally referred to as "Collegetown") is a commercial enterprise on the corner of Rochester Institute of Technology's campus in Rochester, New York. The property is being leased to Wilmorite Properties. The project is currently in development and is scheduled to be complete by August 2008.[1]
The property is 60 acres and will contain 300 apartments, restaurants, bars, and retail stores. They will be all anchored by a Barnes & Noble bookstore, which will double as RIT's new campus bookstore. In the center of property, there will be a square called the Simone Square in honor of Albert J. Simone, RIT's eighth president, who was involved with the project during his presidency.[2]
The apartments will be leased fully furnished and have 15 different apartment layouts, including singles, doubles, triples, quadruples, quintuple. Park Point at RIT is a $72 million[3] dollar project and is expected to bring in $10 million in tax revenue.[4]
Despite being on RIT's campus, the property and housing will not be restricted to students. It will be open to the public, but marketed mostly towards students and faculty of RIT.
[edit] Pre-development
Construction on Park Point was originally planned to start in Fall of 2006, but instead began in late Spring 2007. The delay was attributed to issues with the wetlands in the proposed area. RIT worked with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and the United States Army Corps of Engineers to deal with the issues. Park Point is targeted to open by August 2008.[5]
