Parashah (disambiguation)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Hebrew word parashah (plural: parashot or parashiyyot) narrowly means section, portion, or event. It usually refers to one of the following:

  1. In rabbinic literature, halakhah and biblical studies, parashah properly refers to a section in the masoretic text of the Hebrew Bible, somewhat resembling a modern paragraph.
  2. In popular parlance, parashah is usually used as a shortened form of the term parashat ha-shavua, the Weekly Torah portion read in the synagogue. (Some Ashkenazim traditionally use the word Sidra or Sedra with the same meaning rather than parashah, but parashah is by far the more popular term and the only one used in modern spoken Hebrew.)
  3. A parashah can also mean one of the seven sub-divisions of the Weekly Torah portion, to which an individual is called up in the reading of the Torah.
