ID#: 5577

This electron micrograph depicts a number of morphologic variants found in the parapox Orf virus common to sheep and goats.

The Orf virus is a “species-type”, belonging to the genus of viruses known as Parapoxviridae. It can live in soil for a prolonged time, and can cause skin infections in its animal hosts. It is zoonotic, producing skin lesions in infected humans as well.
