Pallipalayam is a panchayat town in Namakkal district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Powerloom is the main business in this town.It is located very closer to Erode Town

As of 2001 India census^[1], Pallipalayam is a town located on the banks of river Cauvery. In Tamil, the term 'Palli' refers to 'dwelling' and 'extensive knowledge' ambiguously and 'palayam' is a general term of locations where civilization grows especially in the Fertile/Agricultural areas (Locations surrounding Ocean/Sea are suffixed as 'Pattinam','Pakkam' and location surrounding plains as 'Oor', etc.). The river Cauvery's beds are rocky and unique in its plains which supports the growth of popular Fresh water fish breeds like eels.

Foods served in the localities are fresh,hygienic and natural comparing to other towns and Cities of the State. The Chicken Varierty named after the town, "Pallipalayam Chicken" is famous all over the country, even in middle-east and western countries.

Though the river banks are plains and fertile, the terrain here is rocky and uneven. Climate usually Dry and hot. Rainfall mostly Cyclonic from Oct-Jan and Summer Mar-June.

Pallipalayam had a population of 35,214. Males constitute 51% of the population and females 49%. Pallipalayam has an average literacy rate of 62%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 69%, and female literacy is 54%. In Pallipalayam, 10% of the population is under 6 years of age.

SPB colony is located at 6 kilometers (4 miles) east to the Erode, India. SPB Colony is the housing accommodation allotted to the employees of the Pulp and Paper mill, Seshasayee Paper & Boards Ltd and its extent is 155 acres. The total population in the colony is roughly around 5,000 consisting of people from various walks of life. It has a higher secondary school, library, park, recreation club, playground, temple, mosque and church.

The nearest airport is Coimbatore, nearest bus terminus and nearest railway station is Erode. The climate is simply superb just because of the number of trees surrounding each and every house there.

Nearby SPB Colony, historically famous temple is Arthanareeshwara Temple at Thiruchengode. In the historical period, Pancha Pandavas came to this place and took sunder the big Rock in the mountain. It is the only place in India where Lord Shiva and parvathi devi in single statue (ie., Lord Shiva gave his left part of body to Parvathi devi).

Pallipalayam gets rainfall during both South West and North East Monsoon Winds. During this season, River Cauvery Floods and creates problem to many residents at river bank. specifically, last two years its beyond ordinary. Following pictures demonstrate that!

[edit] Unlawful Kidney Sale

Pallipalayam is also famous for illegal kidney sale which shook the entire Tamilnadu state. It is happening since 1992 but it attracted big media attention just in the year 2004. The first news about this illegal trade was published in Tamil News Paper Dinamalar by Mr.S.Koilraj Reporter for Pallipalayam area in the year 1992.

[edit] Powerloom Labors

Pallipalayam has maximum number of power loom industries in the state. The labors from these power loom industries were prone to this illegal kidney sale. These labors were from Pallipalayam, Cauvery R.S, Kumarapalayam, Annai Sathyanagar, Avarangadu & karattaan kaadu locality. It is estimated that approximately 20% of the total powerloom labors have undergone this trade.

These labours were taken to work by giving advance money to them by the owners. These advance money will be deducted evenly from their weekly wages. So indirectly these labours has to work in the powerloom industry until they settle that advance money. If they want to quit their job, then they have to settle all the advance money. Since its difficult for them, they are going for this kidney sale option.

People who were taking loans from local finance company's after failing to settle the interest or principal may forced to go for this organ trade.

Nephrectomy or Kidney removal has been done in Hospitals located in Bangalore, Coimbatore and Erode. Hospitals will do this operation after getting mutual consent from the patient's husband or wife. In order to tackle this procedure, these agents will produce fake Ration card or Husband or Wife to the Hospital authorities.

These agents take the person who is willing to give Kidney for money (50,000 ~ 60,000 INR) to above said cities one week earlier. They will be given food and accommodations also preliminary medical test will be conducted with local doctors.

This illegal trade results in the fall of Kidney's Cost for Kidney Transplantation Operations. Kidney's become available for a cheap cost of 50,000 INR in these areas.

Recently Hospital made strict procedure to carryout this kind of operations. Hospitals now request strong legal document before starting any organ transfer operations now. This is a healthy measure to stop this kind of illegal trade.

Unlawful Kidney Trade came to limelight after getting complaints from labours against agents. After starting investigation, entire state turned their attention towards pallipalayam. Karnataka State Police CID's and others came to pallipalayam to carryout investigations. They even discussed with local reporter Mr.S.Koilraj to collect more information about this trade.

Police has arrested many agents and came to know after investigation that they were also powerloom labors who early undergone kidney removal operation. After selling their own kidney they become agents for the sake of commission from main agents.
