Sheikh of Palmyra.

Albumen photograph from the 19 thcentury (Circa 1875) titeled: "The Sheik of Palmyra", most probably a studio portrait. The Sheikh of Palmyra was a popular figure with western travellers in Syria. Travel through the desert to Palmyra, invloved negotiations and special arrangements for the safety of travellers which involved the Sheikh of Palmyra and other leaders ofthe Bedouin tribes along that route. The small settled group of Bedouins served as hosts and guides for the adventurist tourists who ventured to Palmyra in those years.(http://mideastimage.com/)
