Pahokee is a city located on the shore of Lake Okeechobee in Palm Beach County, Florida, United States. The population was 5,985 at the 2000 census. As of 2004, the population recorded by the U.S. Census Bureau is 6,459.[3]
"Pahokee" means 'grassy waters' in the Seminole language. [4]

Pahokee is located at (26.824717, -80.659660).[5]
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 14.0 km² (5.4 mi²), all land.

As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 5,985 people, 1,710 households, and 1,328 families residing in the city. The population density was 428.7/km² (1,109.4/mi²). There were 1,936 housing units at an average density of 138.7/km² (358.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 25.21% White (13.6% were Non-Hispanic White,)[6] 56.06% African American, 0.10% Native American, 0.50% Asian, 15.20% from other races, and 2.92% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 29.46% of the population.
There were 1,710 households out of which 44.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.3% were married couples living together, 22.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 22.3% were non-families. 18.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 6.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.35 and the average family size was 3.79.
In the city the population was spread out with 38.4% under the age of 18, 10.3% from 18 to 24, 25.0% from 25 to 44, 18.1% from 45 to 64, and 8.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 26 years. For every 100 females there were 104.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 100.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $26,731, and the median income for a family was $26,265. Males had a median income of $28,859 versus $20,066 for females. The per capita income for the city was $10,346. About 29.4% of families and 32.0% of the population were below the poverty line, including 39.9% of those under age 18 and 32.0% of those age 65 or over.
As of 2000, residents who spoke English as a first language accounted for 72.78%, while Spanish made up 26.65%, and French Creole as a mother tongue consisted of 0.56% of the population.[7]
As of 2000, Pahokee had the ninety-eighth highest percentage of Cuban residents in the US, with 2.52% of the populace.[8] It also boasts a large African American community.
As of 2000, Pahokee has the highest percentage of people with AIDS in Florida.
Pahokee Middle/Senior High School has a very successful football program, winning 4 of the last 5 state 2b championships.(2003, 2004, 2006, 2007)
