Pacific Cup

The Pacific Cup is a rugby league competition for international teams from the pacific region.

It was started in 1974 by Keith Gittoes of the New South Wales Rugby League. It was held twice in the 1970s before being abandoned due to cost. The competition was revived in the 1980s, and held biennually until 1997 (when it was held as the Oceania Cup by Super League aligned teams). The Pacific Cup was revived by the New Zealand Rugby League in 2004 and was most recently held in February and March 2006

Under a shake up of the whole international structure of rugby league by the RLIF it has been proposed that winners of a Pacific Cup, involving Papua New Guinea, Tonga, Samoa,Fiji and the Cook Islands, gain entry to another proposed tournament, the Southern Hemisphere Four Nations with Australia, New Zealand & England. This plan has yet to be ratified by the RLIF.
