Despite the significant achievements made in Mongolia’s economic growth in the past few years, Mongolia’s youth, who comprise a large segment of the total population, still face several serious issues and hardships.
Firstly, an apparent loss in values, ambition, motivation and understanding of vital life issues has seen a surge in alcoholism, and lack of direction in life leading to many feeling left out and unable to participate actively in society. Such issues could lead to serious health concerns in the future and also crime.
Further to this, youth unemployment in Mongolia is also high. Despite the high number of universities, and courses available, basic professional skills, goal setting, leadership development, teamwork and public speaking skills, which are vital for professional employment, are poorly developed for local students. Furthermore, there is a great lack of vocational training capacity for youth. At the same time, employers are facing a serious shortage of both skilled and trades employees, requiring vital professional skills to be taught to young people in alternate patterns.
Although there are a few organizations in Mongolia aiming to work on youth development, there is only one which actively empowers young people and this is also the only youth-run organization working in this field. This organization is Oyuny Chadvar, established by a team of four youths in 2006. Already they have worked to train over 6000 youth in 9 aimags. The team have since expanded and believe that teaching the vital skills mentioned above will greatly help change the futures and fortunes for youth in Mongolia.
Many nations overseas have hundred of such non-governmental organizations which help young people in alternate (or extra-curricular) paths to develop vital life and professional skills. Investing in the development of youth has been proven by major institutions to have tremendous compound benefits to society in the long term and is a crucial part of human and societal development.
As a swiftly developing nation, Mongolia needs such investment for its youth, to ensure they can continue to build the nation and their livelihoods.
