Oxford Circle, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Oxford Circle is a neighborhood in in the lower Northeast section of Philadelphia, PA. Its namesake is the much used traffic circle made up of the intersection of Oxford Avenue, Cheltenham Avenue, Castor Avenue and Roosevelt Boulevard. [1]

Oxford Circle is also the colloquial name for the nearby Summerdale neighborhood, which is located west of the Roosevelt Boulevard (US-1), opposite the city's Frankford section.

Physical boundaries are: Roosevelt Boulevard (US-1) on the southeast, Langdon Street on the west, and Devereaux Avenue on the north.

Oxford Circle was originally Oxford Township, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania. It was an early suburb of the town of Philadelphia.

For the better part of the 20th Century, Oxford Circle was a primarily white, middle class neighborhood, most notable of Irish-American, or Jewish-American descent. [2] White Flight [3][4] and rising crime rates have dramatically changed this neighborhood over the past decade. Today's Oxford Circle contains a very wide variety of peoples, including a large number of Puerto Ricans, Asians, and African-Americans & Mexicans
