Oswestry School

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Oswestry School is a co-educational independent school, located in the town of Oswestry, Shropshire, England. Founded in 1407 by David Holbache and his wife Gwenwhyvver Holbache, it is the second oldest non-church school in England.

The school currently owns three sites: the main Oswestry School site, Bellan House School site, and the playing fields at the side. The playing fields are reputed to be the location of the battleground of Maesyllan where King Penda of Mercia defeated King Oswald of Northumbria.

As of 2001, the headmaster is Paul Stockdale. It has been under the current headmasters head-ship that a number of key things have been changed. A lot of land has been sold to make money for new developments such as the new canteen and tennis courts. Holbache House was the biggest change in the schools history when it was sold to make way for modern fancy apartments. Although some saw the selling of the various lands as bad, it needs to be considered that the school is one of the oldest independent schools in the UK, and change has to come about eventually.

The school has five departments, divided according to the pupils' age. There are four houses at the school: Burnaby, Donne, Oswald and Spooner (which won on the house trophy on the sixhundreth year). Each house is made up of pupils and staff and the compete against each other in the fields of music, theatre and sport. At the end of the year the house that is most successful is awarded a cup.

Among the many activities the school offers is the CCF (Combined Cadet Force), which offers pupils the chance to engage in military training and is a great advertisement to the students to join the Army. There is also the Decimus Society, which is a philosophical society that members of the sixth form, staff and guests can attend. Works of the Decimus Society can be found on the school website. The school plays sport to a high level, lead by the long serving Peter Jones, and competes regularly against local rivals such as Shrewsbury, Wrekin and Ellesmere College.
