One of the names attributed to the ancient settlement now known as Novgorod. Only referenced as Ostrogard by German annalist and geographer, Adam of Bremen, Novgorod’s more commonly remembered by its more common Varangian (Viking) name of Holmgard.
The surname ‘Ostergard’ is more commonly thought to derive from the literal øster ‘eastern’ + gård ‘farmstead or camp’. (Danish, Østergaard and Swedish, Östergaard)
