Ostan (subnational entity)

An Ostan is an administrative subdivision of Iran. It is similar to province in English. Each Ostan has a markaz-e ostan, the capital city, and several Shahrestan. Each Ostan also has an Ostandari; an office to coordinate all governmental offices and organizations within an Ostan. The Ostandar or the head of Ostandari is the governor which is the highest authority in the subdivision.
