Osmotherapy is a kind of treatment that for certain diseases. The word comes from osmosis, which is suggested [1] to come from old Greek 'to push', and therapy, or treatment of a condition. Osmotherapy usually consists of creating a chemical gradient against the tissue to be treated, to assist with chemical movement.

For example, osmotherapy can be used to treat a patient who has cerebral hemorrhage. This might include the use of mannitol to maintain the brain's homeostasis.
