Oscar Araripe (b. July 1941) is a Brazilian artist, writer, educator, and social and ecological activist.

[edit] Early life

Oscar Araripe was born in Tijuca, Rio de Janeiro, in July 1941. His mother was from Ceara (in northern Brazil) and his gaúcho father from the extreme south. They moved to the proletarian neighborhood of Encantado (“Enchanted”), where his father, a doctor, and his mother, a teacher carried on their professions.

He participates in the CACO-Livre student lidership.Travels to the United States on a scholarship from the Interamerican University Foundation in ‘66 and ‘68. Attends seminars at Harvard, USA. After returning to Brazil, his essay "A Brief Introductory Study of Personalism" earned him a scholarship to the Pro Deo University in Rome. While in Rome, he traveled across Europe and wrote for many different publications.Returns to Brazil, in 1969. Becomes a theater critic, cultural editorialist, columnist, writer and reporter for Correio da Manhã, Última Hora and Jornal do Brasil. Edits, with Augusto Rodrigues, the journal Art and Education. Founding member of the International Society of Education through Art (INSEA). As a journalist, invited to travel to Poland, Germany and China. Publishes China: The Possible Pragmatism for Artenova Publishing, with great success.

[edit] 1970s and 1980s

In the 1970s, Araripe left journalism to focus on literature and published various books as Maria na Terra de Meus Olhos (1974), China, O Pragmatismo Possível (1975), Marta Júpiter e Eu(1986).Returns to Brazil, in 1969. Becomes a theater critic, cultural editorialist, columnist, writer and reporter for Correio da Manhã, Última Hora and Jornal do Brasil. Edits, with Augusto Rodrigues, the journal Art and Education. Founding member of the International Society of Education through Art (INSEA). As a journalist, invited to travel to Poland, Germany and China. Is cited in the bibliography of the New Aurélio Dictionary (the country’s leading dictionary). Takes part in Afrânio Coutinho’s Brazilian Encyclopaedia of Literature. In 1984, he finished his book Eu Promeu, o que Amazoneu, which was his first foray into painting. Four years later, his first exhibit was held at the Olivia Kann Gallery in Ipanema, Rio de Janeiro.

Araripe has exhibited extensively, including at the Bank of Brazil's Cultural Center in Rio de Janeiro, the Republic Museum in Rio, the Mineiro Museum, in Belo Horizonte, and as part of the official presentations of ECO-92 UN World Conference, which was seen by an estimated 2 million people. His work has also been shown in Santiago de Cuba, Cuba; the IV Biennale di Firenze, Italy; the Visual Arts League Exhibition at Lincoln Center, New York; and the Solange Rabello Gallery, Miami.

In 2006, he and his wife Cidinha Araripe, created the Oscar Araripe Foundation, and bought the house next to his studio, in Tiradentes, Brazil, where they will develop artistic-cultural exhibitions and other projects.
