This is a notable salsa band, well known among salsa music lovers. It is notable and definitely deserves inclusion in Wikipedia.

[edit] Notability Guidelines

Re: The notability of Orquesta de la Luz:

Obviously this would need to be backed up by proper citation, but from a quick google search I've dug up the following info:

1. Their debut album hit number one on the Billboard Latin Salsa Chart, and remained there for 11 consecutive weeks.

2. They have won several awards. Admittedly, the sources I'm giving here are very biased (the band's website, and a fansite for the lead singer) but I'm including it just for the sake of discussion:

Outstanding Award at the Japan Record Award (91 & 93), the United Nations Peace Medal Award (93), performed at the NHK Kohaku Utagassen (93) and nominated for the Grammy Award “Tropical Latin Album” (95).

1991 The Best Album of the year " by ACE AWARDS (New York critic society) " Special Prize " by 33rd JAPAN RECORD AWARDS 1992 " The Best Album of the year " , " The Best Band of the year " by ACE AWARDS 1993 " PEACE MEDAL " by The United Nations " Special Prize " by 35th JAPAN RECORD AWARDS 1995 Nominated for the GRAMMY AWARDS at the category of " Best Tropical Latin Album ", " The Best New Artist " by the Japanese Minister of Education at the category of Popular Entertainment

(Of course, there would need to be confirmation of these awards through the literature of the actual awarding bodies.)

3. Although not citable, they seem to have a huge following: the few websites I've visited where comments can be left seem to show a fanbase, and as soon as I asked those friends of mine who are into Salsa music about this band, they recognized it immediately. Obviously this is not citable, but I mention it to point out that there may be some citable evidence of a large fanbase based on my quick investigation... at least worth looking into some more.

Taken all together, they definately seem notable - at least notable enough for an inclusion in Wikipedia - very possibly notable enough to expand the article quite a bit. Dexeron 12:54, 25 September 2006 (UTC)
