Order of the Southern Cross

The National Order of the Southern Cross is Brazil's highest order of merit.
It was originally known as the Imperial Order of the Southern Cross. It was founded on December 1, 1822 by Emperor Peter I of Brazil (IV of Portugal), on the day of his Coronation as Brazil's first Emperor, but was suppressed after the proclamation of the Republic in Brazil by decree of February 24, 1891.
However, the Order was re-established by President Getúlio Vargas on December 5, 1932, and is now only conferred as an act of foreign relations on the part of the Brazilian Government.
Membership of the order comes in six classes:
- Grand Collar
- Grand Cross
- Grand Official
- Commander Official
- Knight
