Oral Systemic

Oral-Systemic Connection The Oral Systemic Connection is the idea that there is a link between major medical problems and the health status of the mouth. Medical research and literature published since the late 90's has shown a significant correlation between chronic infections in the mouth known as periodontal disease and increases in systemic inflammatory markers such as C-reactive protein and HbA1c. Periodontal disease is now a well documented known risk factor for heart attack, pre-term birth, stroke and diabetes.

Oral-Systemic Medicine Oral Systemic Medicine is the practice of physicians and dentists screening for periodontal disease and measuring levels of inflammatory markers such as C-Reactive Protein, cytokines, Interleukin 1, and Homocysteine. Gum disease is an inflammatory condition that does not go away with out treatment and is a major cause of inflammation in many people. Oral systemic medicine is the practice of treating chronic inflammation to reduce risk of atherosclerosis, arteriosclerosis, stroke, heart attack and cancer while also treating for periodontal disease.
