[edit] Scope of Open Data

I have started this page (it is of course our page, not my page) with the idea of collecting current usage of the term "Open Data" and trying to formulate a definition. There are a number of areas which (in my opinion) are distinct from Open Data - they may be supersets or may overlap - and the section "Relation to other Open Activities" was created to allow these to be mentioned briefly and contrasted.

[edit] Relation to Open Data

There is a danger that this section becomes (a) larger than the main article and (b) the primary place for describing activities and philosophies which are not mainstream Open Data. There is a particular need to discuss Open Access in relation to OD as it is of great current interest, has a large WP entry and there is great confusion. I suggest that this section is used only to (a) list areas where distinction is necessary and (b) each entry is limited to a sentence of two.

I have trimmed all the entries in this section as there are references to the primary definitions elsewhere. Petermr 00:13, 6 November 2006 (UTC)

Re: your undo of Data as singular noun. The "Data" page itself has inconsistant usage, but clearly states that most scientific and technical journals require this noun be used as a plural. As this is a technical artical, I would suggest that plural is appropriate. That said - final say should go to the one who went to the effort to write the page.

[edit] Open Notebook Science redirected to Open Data

I was searching for a Wikipedia Entry for Open Notebook Science and see that it was redirected to Open Data. I see Open Data as a subset or an outcome of Open Notebook Science but is not ONS. I discussed my intention to open up an article on ONS with JC Bradley from Drexel who coined the term [1]. He tells me he tried to set up an article previously but had it removed (don't know details but will be meeting with him tonight to discuss). Is there a reason why an article on ONS would not be supported?--ChemSpiderMan (talk) 15:24, 18 January 2008 (UTC)
