OpenJPEG is an open-source library to encode and decode JPEG 2000 images. Version 1.3 was released on 21st December 2007.
Under development are:
- JP2 and MJ2 (Motion JPEG 2000) file formats
- an indexing tool useful for the JPIP protocol
- JPWL-tools for error-resilience
and other features.
[edit] Support for lossless 16-bit images
Unlike JasPer, another open-source JPEG 2000 implementation, OpenJPEG fully respects the JPEG 2000 specification and can compress/decompress lossless 16-bit images.
