During the final days of Japanese rule in Korea, the Japanese army succeed in obtaining the "Light of the East", a legendary diamond that has been lost for hundreds of years. Con artist Bong-gu plans to steal the diamond before it is shipped to Japan, but he faces competition from Choon-ja, a jazz singer who moonlights as a masked thief.

Once Upon a Time was released in South Korea on January 30, 2008,[1] and was ranked third at the box office on its opening weekend, grossing $1,971,473.[2] It topped the box office on its second weekend,[3] and by March 23 had grossed a total of $10,614,012.[4] As of February 24, 2008, the total number of tickets sold was 1,529,693.[5]

In a review for the Korean Film Council, Yi Ch'ang-ho described the film as being "technically excellent" and "a well balanced heist comedy", also praising the film for its use of music and portrayal of 1940s Korea.[6] Yang Sung-jin of The Korea Herald commended the "solid performances of the leading characters", while also giving credit to the comic relief provided by supporting actors Seong Dong-il and Jo Hee-bong.[7]

Lee Bo-yeong has been nominated for Best New Actress at the 44th Baeksang Awards. The awards ceremony is due to be held on April 24, 2008.[8]
