From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Pop royalty is a term that reflects the many great pop musicians who have some sort of royal title in their names or nicknames. (Note: The context of pop music here will be used in the context of popular mainstream music). This article will also focus on titles awarded to artists (but nicknames will be treated in a seperate context.)

[edit] The King of Pop

Arguably, the most known pop royalty or title goes to Michael Jackson, who is known for being The King of Pop. Contrary to popular belief, the title was not coined by Jackson himself, but by his good friend, Elizabeth Taylor. However, the public at large is not aware of this and often associate Jackson to self proclaiming this title due to pre-concieved notions over Jackson's supposed ego and supposed eccentricity. Nevertheless, the term was accepted into mainstream culture, after being jetsooned by fans of Jackson.

Holding down the title of The King of Pop has been no easy task though. Critics have often questioned if Jackson is still the true King of Pop or just a has-been. Following recent lackluster sales of his latest album, and his infamy with child molestation, many feel that his title should be revoked from him. However, another camp points out that Jackson rightfully holds the title, and that no one is in near contention. His 1982 album Thriller is the best-selling all-original album of all time, with over 58 million records sold to date. He is arguably also the most succesful solo male artist of all time.

Many in the camp who disagree about Jackson being the current King of Pop point to a succesor who they believe is the current King of Pop: Justin Timberlake. Currently, Timberlake is the most succesful male pop solo artist in the music industry today. He also creates music and dances like Jackson. In fact in 2001, while Timberlake's group NSYNC were performing their suitably titled song "Pop" at the MTV Video Music Awards, Jackson made a cameo apperance that many see as Jackson handing the title to Timberlake. Rolling Stone magazine has even gone so far as to proclaim Timberlake, The New King of Pop. However, reaction against this notion was considered too bold, and as of writing, Jackson is still considered The King of Pop.
