I went ahead and classed this song as a Negro spiritual, even though I couldn't find it in any of the collections of old slave and plantation songs collected after the Civil War. The problem with using the Jubilee Singers as a source is that they used songs from many sources in their performances. "Old Time Religion" seems more akin to those old songs that came out of the camp meetings of the 1820s and 30s than to other songs collected from former slaves--but 1873 is as best as so far found.
