According to [1], the road was the first laid out on Long Island, running from Fulton Ferry to Orient and Riverhead to Easthampton. That matches Middle Country Road, but does not explain the portion near Westhampton. [2] appears to be talking about the same road, and states that it roughly followed Fulton Street and was then known as the South Country Road. [3] refers to the Middle Country Road, passing through or near West Hills, Huntington Station (Long Swamp), Dix Hills, Commack, and then the current Middle Country Road. What's unclear is how it went west of Mineola; [4] shows Hollis Avenue as part of it.

...and here we are (sort of): an 1842 map (and an 1844 map) that labels "Middle Post Road" and "South Post Road", splitting at Hollis. Old Country Road through Mineola appears to be an older alignment of the Middle Post Road from before the Jericho Turnpike was built, and split from the Jericho Turnpike near New Hyde Park. It may have used Duffy Avenue and Marie Street through Hicksville. It appears that the portion near Melville has been relocated. --NE2 19:49, 4 June 2008 (UTC)
