Old Toby

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Old Toby was a Shoshone guide for the Lewis and Clark Expedition.

Nowhere in the journals was this Shoshone man referred to as "Old Toby." He was simply called Toby. This mis-naming has occurred many times in the popular literature.

He was their guide from the Lemhi Valley at Salmon, Idaho until they reached the lower Clearwater River above Lewiston, Idaho.
