Olaf Thon (born May 1, 1966 in Gelsenkirchen) is a former German footballer with two of Germany‘s most successful clubs. Olaf Thon represented Germany at three World Cups and in the German hosted 1988 European Football Championship where Germany were defeated in the semi-finals. He did not play many games under Berti Vogts due to a disagreement with the then manager of the German National Football Team, this meant he missed out on appearing at the 1994 Fifa World Cup and the 1992 European Football Championship and 1996 European Football Championship.

He played first from 1972 to 1980 in the youth crews of the STV Horst-Emscher and changed then to the FC Schalke 04. On 24 August 1984 Thon made his first appearance in the Bundesliga against Borussia Mönchengladbach, which Schalke lost with 1:3. His main role on the field was as a midfield player who later operated as a Central Defender.
