Uchinaa is NOT the name of Okinawa City in the local dialect. Uchinaa refers only to the island and it has a strong connotation of distinctive culture/identity. Local people call the city "Okinawa shi" or "Koza". (83.7.186.251 07:53, 19 May 2007 (UTC))

[edit] Okinawa City

Shortly after Okinawa reverted to Japanese rule, the local government changed the name from Koza to Okinawa City to in an effort to increase Japanese tourists from the mainland. The name is officially, Okinawa City. Also, Uchinaa ウチナー is Okinawan dialect (hogen 方言) and means "Okinawan". An Uchinanchū ウチナンチュー means an Okinawan native. Since the official name for the city is Okinawa City, all incidences of Okinawa (in reference to the city, not the island) on this page needs to be changed to Okinawa City. I'll do it, but I don't want to start a war, so I'll wait for comments first. --fizzman 07:30, 19 October 2007 (UTC)
