[edit] High school athletics/notable alums
I deleted the information about the high school basketball team and notable people. Information about high school athletics belongs either in it's own section on this page or on the Okemos High School page. Especially since there are far more successful sports than the basketball program (Tennis, Soccer, etc.).
[edit] Pronunciation
Would be nice to know how Okemos is pronounced! --Bastique 13:16, 24 Mar 2005 (UTC)
- OH-kuh-muss --- hope that helps.--Pmeisel 05:25, 26 Mar 2005 (UTC)
People, please use the + that is next to the edit page link. It will clearly illustrate your topic.
Actually, it's Oh-Kee-Muss. Named after an indian chief who spent the summers with his clan on the banks of the Red Cedar off Hamilton Road near the four corners.
No, it really is not Oh-Kee-Muss, the first person had it correct. I've never heard one person from the town pronounce it anything other than Oh-kuh-muss or Oh-kuh-miss
[edit] Pronunciation
Regardless of how Chief Okemos's name may have been pronounced (and I doubt that it was "oh-kee-muss"), locals pronounce the town's name as "oh-kuh-miss"
(IPA: /ˈowkəməs/ or /ˈowkəmɪs/). Masily box 23:19, 2 March 2006 (UTC)
- Except that we don't. The kee pronunciation is the most commonly used when talking about the town. -Comment left on 12 June by 24.11.153.22

- Really? I've lived in Okemos for 19 years and haven't heard anyone who lives here pronounce the middle syllable as "kee". Masily box 15:55, 21 August 2006 (UTC)
I wonder how Cheif ohKEEmos feels about it?
[edit] Points of Interest
So I've removed a lot of the points of interest I think are most questionable; if anyone objects to the changes I've made, let me know. Actually, I don't really think that anything currently on there qualifies as a point of interest, so if no one really objects, I'd like to do away with the entire list. Masily box 03:57, 7 June 2007 (UTC)
A traffic circle? A 24-hour supermarket? Really. I question whether even the mall and the Travelers Club are really noteworthy enough to be mentioned. Masily box 08:29, 13 December 2006 (UTC)
We're a boring town. It's all we have worth mentioning! Especially the Traveler's Club/Tuba Museum, it's a well-loved place.[Comment left March 5, 2007]
[edit] Business in Okemos
I removed the entire section because it cited no references and did not really provide useful information about "business in Okemos".
Tech Smith, creator of SnagIt and Camtasia Studio, comes from Okemos. (But, no longer in Okemos)
So does the medical company Information Health Network. (Lots of businesses in Okemos. This one is noteworthy?)
Okemos has a big AT&T office. (There used to be an AT&T office in Meridian Township. Gone now. Unless you refer to the Okemos Central Office (telephone switch). Every town has one of those. Not really notable). TRosenbaum 08:48, 2 August 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Businesses in Points of Interest
I've already admitted my bias that I don't like having a points of interest section at all; to me, it has exactly the same kinds of flaws that trivia lists do. That said, I'm willing to leave it, provided that we're circumspect about what businesses we're willing to list there. The Meridian Mall is the only one of the previously listed businesses that strikes me as notable, so I feel that listing any of the others is just free advertising. If someone wants to argue the point, though, I'm listening. (But traffic circles? Come on...) Masily box 19:26, 2 August 2007 (UTC)
