I presume the English town of Oatlands is the one used as a basis for the name. I found a couple of online references for that:

However, I also found a reference that claims the town was named by Governor Macquarie "as it reminded him of the oat growing areas in his native Scotland":
I don't know who to believe, and these references don't give the source of their information. Perhaps both possibilities need to be stated in the article unless someone knows a good reference. Barrylb (talk) 10:52, 14 January 2008 (UTC)
