[edit] Foundations
In 1988, Irish businessman, Brody Sweeney set up his first Sandwich shop in Dublin, Ireland. He chose the name O’Brien’s because it was the most common name in the phone book and he wanted a very common Irish surname in the event of expansion overseas.
After being refused the bank loan he needed to buy the premises, Mr. Sweeney quickly went to several money lenders telling each one he wished to buy furniture.
[edit] Expansion
Initially only in Ireland, the chain is now operating over 300 Sandwich Bar outlets in Australia, China, Denmark, United Kingdom, Gibraltar, India, Indonesia, the Kingdom of Bahrain, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Spain, Taiwan, Thailand, The Netherlands and Wales.
The company is rapidly expanding into other areas with plans to open 60 Juice Bars over the next 12 months.[citation needed]
[edit] Restaurants
The layout of the sandwich bar doesn't follow any particular pattern. In many cases there aren't any tables and chairs and take-away is the only option. Outlets are usually single story. Sometimes outdoor seating is offered.
[edit] Menu
O’Brien’s was founded to offer the classic sandwich. Sweeney believed that the slices of bread should be thicker. Several different breads are available, including rolls and 2 different types of wraps. If eaten in store crisps are served alongside the sandwich. Fillings include a vast range of meat, vegetables and sauces.
