[edit] Personal info

I am Brazilian, born in the city of Belo Horizonte, MG in 17/02/1981. I moved in 10/2007 to São Paulo, SP.

[edit] Professional info

I graduated in Electrial Engineering at the UFMG in the end of 2004. I started my graduate studies (master's) at UNICAMP, and I'm currently at USP (doctorate).

Since teenager I have often helped my mother in her informatics consulting firm. My first official job was as intern at a R&D company called Excegen, trying to identify genetic patterns in oxes. At UNICAMP I had a brief participation in a project related to the new digital television standard. After that I received CAPES scholarships.

[edit] Research

As someone who seeks to use the scientific method, I am a scientist, but I also like to see myself as a philosopher of Epistemology, Psychology and Cognitive Science that life turned into an engineer.

My main research interests are signal processing, information theory, (artificial) intelligence, pattern recognition and mathematical/physical modeling of human behavior in general. I contribute to a research group called CEFALA at UFMG, and today I work at LTI at USP.

My master's research was about overdrive distortion, the dynamics of the guitar strings and overdrive perception. I am also interested in the perception of reverberation and in computational music composition, always concerned with electronic, hard-rock and electric-blues music. My doctoral studies involve Mobile robotics and Reinforcement Learning.

[edit] Articles

I write a lot of stuff that will end up in "history's garbage can" (I stole that from a Freeman Dyson text). I had a blog in portuguese, called LIFO. I started another one (for no good reason) called phylogroky, and I also have a blog at Nature Network.

Some of my articles get published sometimes...

PUBLISHED

  • One about the implementation of a program that generates a 3D model of a talking head from speech signals
  • Other about perception of overdrive, in the II SMCT

UNPUBLISHED

  • One about a way to encode high-quality regions in JPEG files exploring the overflow in the multiplication at the decoder.
  • Other I will write about applying blind equalisation to vowels, to find an impulsive excitation signal (IF I don't see any other article about this :D )
