Nutricosmetics
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Nutricosmetics (also known as “skingestibles”) is the name for a category of consumer products conveying health benefits related to the skin. These products are taken orally, and thus considered a counterpart to cosmeceuticals (which are used topically). As more clinical research becomes available, nutricosmetics are becoming a viable long-term alternative to cosmetic surgery.

[edit] Industry
The nutricosmetics business is predicted by many to experience major growth in coming years as consumers begin to embrace other products with synthetic or natural ingredients offering demonstrated health benefits. The growing ubiquity of functional foods and beverages on store shelves is an example of this trend.[1] A recent study has estimated double-digit growth through 2011 for an industry already worth over $1 billion.[2]
[edit] Health Applications
Nutricosmetics are especially high in antioxidants, and convey the typically associated benefits on the skin, including:
- Protection from ultraviolet radiation
- Protection against wrinkles
- Whitening/lightening effects
- Firming effects
[edit] Consumer Products
Nutricosmetics are typically found in one of two delivery systems:
- Pills (tablets or capsules)
- Beverages (powdered mixes, or shelf stable “ready-to-drink”)
