Nurmes

Nurmes is a municipality of Finland.
It is located in the province of Eastern Finland and is part of the North Karelia region. The municipality has a population of 8,859 (31.08.2007) and covers an area of 1,855.14 km² of which 249.77 km² is water. The population density is 5.8 inhabitants per km².
The municipality is unilingually Finnish.
Nurmes railway station is now the northern terminus of a twice-daily VR passenger train service from Joensuu. The railway north of Nurmes is open for freight only.
