Numbers 0-9 is an outdoor sculpture by Robert Indiana. The sculpture is comprised of brightly painted numerical digits, each set on its own base. It is located just east of the parking lot to the Indianapolis Museum of Art, near Michigan Road and 38th Street in Indianapolis, Indiana, surrounded by grasses. The sculpture’s appeal and accessibility spring from the artist’s use of everyday material—numbers, rich colors, and the typography of advertising. Though Indiana is best known as a Pop art artist, his color choices—vivid hues and contrasts between different surfaces—and the manner in which the numbers are arranged together—staggered, overlapping, nonlinear—reflect his interest in Op-Art. Indiana told the New York Times [1] that his inspiration for his numbered works (of which this sculpture is only one example) was “a 17th century print, which shows the stages in man’s life.”
