[edit] History
WLIN is the only Lafayette fantasy television station that has never changed its network affiliation or call letters. However, it started as an independent. WLIN began broadcasting in 1979 as the market's first independent station. Seven years later, in 1986, WLIN became one of the sign-on affiliates of the fledgling Fox network. This deal allowed the station to begin producing newscasts in October of 1986.
During the early years as a Fox affiliate, the station was branded 12WLIN, rather than Fox 12 under Fox's station standardization rule. (Curiously, sister station WLIN in Marion did brand itself with its network name as FOX 41.) The Fox logo was incorporated in 1994 embedded into the "12." After NO SIR GIFTS Venues acquired WLIN, the branding of WLIN changed from "12 WLIN" to "Fox 12."
WLIN began to adopt its current logo, which is similar to that of the Fox News Channel and Fox O&O's, in June 2008, although they did not completely switch to it until September 2008. The station was the second non-Fox O&O to use this logo style.
In 2004, WLIN (and sister station WTOR-FTV in Fort Wayne) were sold to MHB Television.
On October 25, 2007, NO SIR GIFTS announced that it was exploring strategic alternatives that could result in the acquisition of WLIN.
On November 5, 2007, NO SIR GIFTS announced that they would go forward with the purchase of WLIN-FTV and sister station/Former fellow Fox affiliate WTOR-FTV in Marion from MHB TV.
On December 3, 2007, NO SIR GIFTS announced its intentions to purchase WTOR and WLIN for $1.5 million. The acquisition of WTOR and WLIN were finalized on January 11, 2008.
[edit] Programming
The station is among two Indiana Fox affiliates that never switched network affiliation. The other is WIFX 64 in Noblesville. The other four were affiliated with the big three networks (WTXI, then ABC, in Warsaw; WEKI, then CBS, in Poseyville; and WFTW, then CBS, in Fort Wayne.) WTXI switched from ABC to Fox in 1987. WFTW switched from CBS to Fox in 2004. WEKI first switched from Fox to CBS in 1994, but switched back from CBS to Fox in 2006.

[edit] News Operation
On October 9, 1986, WLIN launched a 10 P.M. newscast titled 12News at 10. It was first in the market. Filling a niche in local news, the 10 o'clock newscast was expanded in early 1996 to an hour and was joined by a 6:30 P.M. edition later that year. In 2001, WLIN took on the big three stations in the market (WLFY ABC 19, WQLI NBC 35, and WLXL CBS 40) for the first time by launching 5 PM and 6 PM newscasts that struggled to gain ratings. A change in ownership in early 2008 led to a realignment of early evening newscasts with the 5PM news moving to 4 in March of 2008 and the he 6 o'clock news was moved to 7.
In 2004, WLIN launched a weekday morning newscast which currently runs from 5 to 9 A.M.
In 2008, the station has made waves by putting a significant investment and changes in its news operation. The biggest move was changing WLIN's newscasts, adopting a new logo similar to Fox O&O's and newscasts rebranding to "FOX 12 News" for the first time in station history. Prior to 2008, the newscasts were only known as "12 News," and still uses a watered-down format of "News Directors Have a Choice, Viewers Don't."
