- 1884 – The People's Passenger Railway opens a new line connecting Eighth Street to Germantown Avenue in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.[1]
- 1892 – The first train ferry service on the Great Lakes and the first in the world over open waters is inaugurated with Ann Arbor Number 1 of the Ann Arbor Railroad between Elberta, Michigan, and Kewaunee, Wisconsin.[2]

- 1902 – The Cleveland Short Line Railway is incorporated to connect Fairport and Lorain, Ohio.[3]
- 1905 – Canadian Northern Railway completes tracklaying to Edmonton, Alberta, with Alberta's Lieutenant Governor ceremonially driving the last spike.[4]
- 1916 – German sleeping and dining car operator Mitropa is founded.
- 1925 – Passenger service is discontinued on the Pajaro Valley Consolidated Railroad in California.[5]
- 1929 – Pere Marquette Railroad launches the City of Saginaw car ferry for service on Lake Michigan.[6]
- 1961 – Ferrocarril Chihuahua al Pacífico (now known as Chepe) opens its line through the Copper Canyon in Mexico.[7]
- 1964 – Canadian National Railway opens the Great Slave Lake Railway connecting Pine Point, Northwest Territories, and Roma Junction, Alberta.[4]
- 1997 – The ownership of some former Canadian National Railway lines in Alberta is officially transferred to RailLink-Lakeland and Waterways.[4]
